MRI & Medical Equipment Applications

Fiber optic sensors for high magnetic field environments where traditional sensors cannot operate.

GAP SENSORS FOR
MRI APPLICATIONS

The 11.7T Whole Body MRI – The Iseult project under
development at CEA-Saclay, in collaboraƟ on with Siemens Healthcare and Alstom Magnets and Superconductors, is scheduled for commissioning in 2012.
Philtec’s fi ber opƟ c sensors are playing a vital role in a
prototype which is very important for assessing the design. Displacements of many items inside the cryogenic
system are being measured successfully to sub-micron
level resoluƟ on

Liquid helium @ 1.8K
• High MagneƟ c Field 11.7T
• Pressure 15 mbar
Gaseous helium @ 6 K to 300 K
• No MagneƟ c Field
• Ambient Pressure

Philtec is a world-wide leading supplier of fi ber opƟ c displacement sensor systems for
operaƟ on in very extreme environments, including:

Fiber Optics for High Magnetic Fields

The Problem

Fiberoptic probes and cables may be exposed to high magnetic fields.

The Solution

By jacketing the fiberoptic cable in non-metallic materials, and by constructing the sensor tip
from non-metallic or non-magnetic materials, Philtec sensors can be configured to perform
measurements in very high magnetic fields. Successful applications to several Tesla have
been reported.
